If you’re like most Americans and worried about making sure your drinking water is clean you probably use waterfilters. And, if you’re like me and have been using a water filter for several years, you probably also struggle with making sure you change your water filter cartridges regularly. If you’re young you may not have any idea how our water got so dirty in the first place.

The short answer to this question is to explain the water cycle. Water follows a natural cycle; it moves rain from the tops of mountains to streams and through rivers to the sea, and then back to the clouds. The water cycle in the United States has been disrupted in many ways. Dredging, damming and tampering or cutting out the ecological niches where water naturally cleans itself. In the long run this tampering has resulted in impure water. That’s where filters come in.
